Fragrant Cool Summer Breezes

Writer's picture: Lisa LalondeLisa Lalonde

I will make a confession. I don't like AC in my home. We have one and unless it is humid and uncomfortable at night and we can't sleep (maybe once a year) it doesn't even go in the window. Now if you're living in southern GA, ya'll gonna think someone over spiked my sweet tea, but We live in central NY. It rarely goes over 90 and our summer lasts for about three weeks so we relish these warm days.

Just outside my front door, in the Winter, we get the winds directly from the arctic tundra, but they seem to change direction in the Summer and that area turns into Hell's front porch, so other than my pitbull who I have to drag in off the front walkway by force out of the sun on a 100-degree day, No one enjoys that area of the house. Last year Etain and I replaced our front door with a beautiful french glass door. It really lets in the light. in the winter, it warms the area up nicely, but for those three weeks we call summer around here, we may as well be living in a pizza oven. , so all of that leads up to this. My wonderful dogs broke my screen door last year and while I'm waiting for a new one to be delivered, creativity has been, well I don't want to say genius, but if you insist... well ok, GENIUS! I took old white sheer curtains that I have had in the back of my closet and

these clips we use at the market. I'll put a link to them. I've found so many uses for them.

Then I soaked them because they were wrinkly and I figured they would hang out the wrinkles. I also remembered reading about a ghetto AC with a towel and ice water in front of a fan to make an evaporative cooler. So, I hung the sheers in front of my open door. They keep out the bugs and block the sun, (no more greenhouse effect) they also provide an evaporative cooler (for about 10 minutes which is how long it took them to dry in the sun and breeze). OK, I have hung laundry outside from time to time and NOTHING has ever dried that fast. I grabbed my spray bottle, the one I u

se to mix essential oils to make air freshener. and I sprayed it on the curtain. The whole house smells fresh and lemony and I remembered that I also made that mix to keep bugs away, so double good. Now the house is cool, the breezes smell good and everyone except my Lily the pitbully is happy, but she can go outside and sit in the sun anytime she wants. I don't know if all of that conveyed, but I feel like I need to stop and take a breath now. I'm going to make a note so you can just skip over my stream of consciousness blathering and get to the good stuff. Mainly because I'm sure I am not the first person to come up with this solution, and Google knows everything.

ENJOY A FRAGRANT COOLING BREEZE

  • Cover your windows and doors with old sheer curtains. Especially the ones where the sun comes in. If you use a light color it will still be bright without letting the heat through.

  • When the temperature rises, put some cool water into a spray bottle and add some lemongrass essential oil. You can also blend or use your favorite oil. At night use some lavender.

  • if there is a breeze outside, the breeze that comes through will cool off your home and it

will stay cooler without needing an AC. if there is no breeze, use a couple of fans and create some airflow.

  • respray the curtains a few times per hour as needed during the hottest part of the day. Your home will smell delightful, it will be cooler and you will not have the shock of going from a cold home to heat and back. The shock of the temperature change can make some people feel ill.
